Clearing the White Cart Walkway

This was for a few years an annual event.

A weekend at the end of the Autumn was chosen when there were at least half a dozen strong fit members available.

A powerful leaf blower was borrowed from the Parks Department, and used [by the redoubtable Stevie Burns] to blow the leaves and light mud off the path and steps.

Behind him was a group of people with brushes to remove the more stubborn bits. And behind them - the heavy team with shovels to sort out the real problem areas - such as the steps at Millholm Road, unblocking drains, and generally taking steps to minimise the possibility of water collecting on the path - e.g. making channels to allow surface water to run off.

There were some surprising moments when for example some otters below the waterfall took an interest in proceedings.

A few weeks before the first clearing on 30th November 2008, on the 14th, the "Life's a Beach" Peoples Millions application to get funding to sort out the paths around the beach, put some steps down, and create a path from the Adventure Playground.

This was successful, and Linn Park beat off the competition in Edinburgh.

The new paths were suitable for access to the beach area which on occasion gets flooded. The design was simple: timber edging, filled with compacted Type 1 ballast stone, and the topped with Whin Dust - that's quarry waster from a crusher, and makes for comfortable walking, and most importantly is not susceptible to getting frosted and slippery in freezing weather.
